Twitter Narrative Individual Summary

Part II:

1)      What surprised you about your narrative? How did you adapt?
For our narrative, what surprise me is that our story for Twitter goes entirely different from the original idea with its development. Since our company is a family business, at first, we plan to tell the story between family members of this company, and everyone plays a role as a family member. Then, in order to well use the hashtag, create conflicts, and draws more attention, some of our role changes into customers to interact with company, and our narrative is changed a lot but also enriched.  For instance, I become a travel enthusiast who is a customer of hash restaurant. I tell my travel story as a comment on the hashtag “call for story”, and for this reason I contact with a member in hash restaurant and finally fall in love with her.
2)      Identify the points you are most proud of.
As a travel enthusiast in our twitter narrative, I pretend I have many traveling experiences and I tell my real travel story in Chongqing China for our twitter narrative. What makes me feel proud is I am followed by a travel agency @WZhonestytravel who may think I am a real travel enthusiast travel from country to country.
3)      What form of media was most useful?
I think photo image is the most useful media for us. It draws more attention than simple text.  The image can enrich our twitter content and it is more vivid and impressive to readers. Besides, although video is also a useful media, but for us, we may not able to create a great video without much preparation and good edit skill.
4)      What form of media did you enjoy the most?
Vlog is the media I enjoy the most. It is an interesting experience to make a vlog, since our vlog is to imitate Taylor Swift’s music video Love Story, and we add funny plot and creative ideas to make it has comedy effect.
5)      Least useful?
I think the least useful media is blog. We use twitter to communicate, share, and draw attention with short text, image, and video. The blog however has very long articles provide information for readers, which is less interesting and attractive.
6)      Least enjoyable?
Text is least enjoyable because for me, because writing is less interesting than creating photo image or vlog. But still, it is a useful and basic media for us to tell story and explain ideas to make audience understand better.
7)      Identify the points you would change and what you would do differently.
I think some of the story plots in our twitter narrative could be enriched, because our story develops a little fast that two members in hash restaurant falls in love with each other and get married in a short time. So, if I could change, I would add more details in the plots about the development of relationship between these roles.

Using Vlog in Twitter Narrative

Using Vlog in Twitter Narrative
Considering that vlog is a useful media we can use to attract more audience. In our narrative story, we will use vlog to create a short video about the cooking competition between two cookers in our restaurant. It is a kind of live cooking show which not only displays the cooking skills of our chef in this restaurant, also the process of cooking and competition can be really excited. The audiences may be interested in this cooking show, and some of them who interested in the cooking methods of hash will also watch this vlog to learn some tips. Therefore, this interesting vlog can help us to advertise our products to customers and also attract more audience on Twitter.

Western Etiquette Culture Migrates to China
With the long-term communication between western and eastern countries, western etiquette culture has spilled over into many areas of people’s lives in China. Nowadays, it is not unusual to see exotic scenes in our daily lives. People drink coffee, use western-style tableware like knives and forks at western restaurants, wearing bridal veil and suits at the wedding, greeting their colleagues and friends with the word “Mr.” or “Miss” in public places. What changes the migration of western etiquette culture brings to China? What influences it leads to? It is worth exploring and considering.
The migration of western etiquette culture brings several new elements to Chinese etiquette culture and makes it change or develop gradually. The first one to be discussed is the social etiquette culture. For a long time, Chinese traditional etiquette culture had profound influences to people’s lives. But since the 1911 Revolution, with the influences of western bourgeoisie’s thoughts “liberty, equality and democracy” (Zhu 39), Chinese traditional etiquette culture suffered a great impact, then in the next May Fourth New Culture Movement, backward and decayed Chinese feudal ethical code was abandoned, and western social etiquette cultures were accepted gradually. Traditional ceremonial behaviors such as bowing and kneeling down in the old days of China are replaced by shaking hands, nodding and smiling. In addition, with the influence western concepts of equality, women’s status is improved notably. Chinese old thought that men are superior to women is replaced by the principle of “ladies first”. For instance, when meeting someone and having a friendly handshake, men should hold out their hands after ladies stretching out hers (Eyring 163). Women are also subject to preferential treatment when they go into the elevator, get on and off the bus, and so on. Moreover, the Chinese traditional social etiquette believes being self-effacing and modest in social occasions shows one’s good personal qualities, but with closer communication between countries, western social etiquette which forces on efficiency and self-confidence rather than stick to polite formulas and be too humble becomes more pragmatic and available, therefore, it is accepted by Chinese gradually.
The second is western dress etiquette culture migrates to China. In ancient China, costume was closely related to the class and identity, it depended on complicated systems and rules. Along with the Opium War which opened the door of China, China entered into a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society, the social structure was changed, western lifestyle and cultures came to China. The western-style clothes were also spread to China just at that time, but it really became popular after the founding of the Republic of China. Based on western-style clothes, the leader of Xinhai Revolution Sun Zhongshan designed the Chinese tunic suit which combined the characteristic of both Chinese and western clothes, and it was widely used as man’s formal clothes in many important occasions that time (Zhu 42). Besides, Chinese women’s traditional clothes cheongsam also had an improvement at that time. It abandoned the old form of traditional Chinese clothing which always had wide robe and large sleeves, absorbed western aesthetic taste and boldly showed female curvaceous shape. It was a successful attempt which used traditional Chinese clothes and fused western culture meanwhile. Moreover, dress in some big occasions of China changes a lot because of the migration of western dress etiquette culture. For instance, at a traditional Chinese wedding, groom and bride both should wear red wedding clothes, the bride must use a red cloth to cover her head before the wedding finishes. But in today’s wedding, the groom usually wears a black suit with leather shoes, and the bride is supposed to wear a white bridal veil and high-heeled shoes.
Thirdly, the migration of western dining etiquette culture also brings considerable influences to China. After the Opium War in 1840, western powers flooded into China, and western cuisine and western dinning etiquette culture were brought there at the same time. More western-style restaurants were set up in China, western food became popular and western dining etiquette was known and observed by more and more Chinese people. For example, it is a basic etiquette to keep the fork in the left hand and the knife or spoon in the right during the meal (McCray 146). People are supposed to keep quiet and sit up straight when having meal, talking loudly or hunching over can be regarded as a very impolite behavior.
China has been a state of ceremonies from of old, thousands of years’ civilization contributes to its complete etiquette culture. However, because of the risen of Chinese etiquette culture at ancient time was to meet the need of its social system, it’s inevitable that it contained some characteristic features of that time and limitations. Therefore, the migration of western etiquette culture is effectively promote the development of Chinese etiquette culture, it eliminates a lot of backward and decayed factors of Chinese etiquette culture, brings vigor and vitality to it and makes it keeps up with the trend of times. But meanwhile, it is also important to insure the migration of western etiquette culture will not downplay positive impacts of Chinese traditional etiquette culture, which play a great role on the national cohesion, cultural inheritance, integration and development.

Use Media in Twitter Narrative

In our twitter narrative, we use broadcast to create a story and get more audience’s attention. There is an old couple who eating in the hash restaurant arguing about whether they should go abroad for travelling after the missing of airline MH370. In this situation, we broadcast the news of the missing of airline MH370 in our restaurant to draw customers’ attention to this event. And also the audience who know details of the incident might believe our narrative. Then we can put this small story happened in our restaurant into twitter to trigger the discussion of readers. This is a way to use different media to create a story and attract more attention.

Response to "Is Twitter a 2 way Street?"

From the Freaknomics Blog, we learned that actually there is no necessary connection between following more people and being followed by more people. It can be possible that you follow a large number of people but the followers on your tweeter are reducing, while some other people do not follow many but have lots of followers. So, how to attract more followers on Twitter? In one way, you should be active and post some interesting tweets regularly on your Twitter, and gradually you might become famous on Twitter and followed by more people. For instance, Halpern’s tweeter has many followers because his writing about the shit that Halpern’s dad says, which attracts many readers attention. And the second is that you are a famous and popular person in real life, and there will be many followers on your blog.

Infographic Project

Model infographic

“Behind The Scenes of Viral Music” By Fandistro
Useful: use data by creating a chart or graph to draw attention; display six elements that make music go viral by using vivid pictures with few text explanations; use images to present idea.

Not useful: the graph in this infographic looks common; use repeated images to show the number of an object.

How does the model accommodate its content?
This model accommodate this TEDtalk content for the reasons that firstly the beginning of the TEDtalk uses several digital data to draw attention which can be translated in a chart like the model infographic shows; secondly, the TEDtalk later tells three reasons why we are losing our listening and five exercises to improve our conscious listening. These contents can be transformed into infographic with specific images and text explanation just like model infographic, and keeps the similar pattern.

My TEDtalk:
Julian Treasure: "5 Ways to Listen Better"
Outline:

1.      Generally talks about the phenomenon that people are losing their listening.

2.      Listening is a mental process of extraction.
Listening techniques: pattern recognition and differencing.
Intention is important in listening.
3.      Sound places us in space and in time.
4.      The reasons we are losing our listening:
a)        We invented ways of recording
b)        The world is now so noisy
c)        We are becoming impatient and desensitized
5.      Five exercises to improve our conscious listening:
a)        Silence: to hear the quiet
b)        Mixer: listen in a noisy environment
c)        Savoring: enjoying mundane sounds
d)       Listening positions: move listening position to what's appropriate to what you're listening to
e)        An acronym—RASA: receive; appreciate; summarize; ask
6.      The importance for human being to listen consciously.

Twitter bot is a non-official client application for Twitter acts like an intelligent robot helps to tweet and reply instantly along with retweets, favorites, and quotes. In our Twitter Narratives, the twitter bot is a person whose comments generate conflicts between our company and customers. Our company is named Hash which is in the form of family-owned business, we open restaurant and provides different kinds of hash.
The story happens when one customer in our restaurant posts a tweet in our company twitter, which writes that the hash in the restaurant is so delicious that he is totally addicted to it. Then there is another people pretends to be the twitter bot and catches the keywords which are "hash" and "addicted". So the twitter bot makes a command, "Oh my god! People eat hash, the drug, in that restaurant. It is illegal! We cannot eat at that restaurant anymore!"
In this story, the twitter bot misunderstands the meaning of "hash", which makes a conflict. Is our restaurant illegal? Should people stay away from our restaurant? The managers of this restaurant then face a fake rumor and need to fight for company’s reputation and legalization.

Response to "Infographic Thinking Workshop"
From the reading I think this infographic thinking workshop is very meaningful, for nowadays the images and infographic play a more important role and widely used for people from different occupations to convey ideas and information. Also this infographic thinking workshop pays more attention on creativity, to visually convey ideas and meaning rather than traditionally think it as visual elements for recording. So with the creativity, during the process of making infographic, we can recognize new meaning and knowledge. And with the infographic thinking which approach and interpret reality, today we can also use infographic to translate a complex issue into an effective and recognizable visual form, which helps us to understand the reality and discover new knowledge. Therefore, from the idea of this workshop, it is clear that infographics actually can inspire and encourage critical thinking to the readers, rather than just convey ideas and make them have a better understanding about the information. And it is really meaningful for the workshop to develop infographic for visual communication and better understanding of reality since it has wide range of applications today.

6.      The importance for human being to listen consciously.

Evaluate:
1). It is a good TEDTalk because the speaker clearly clarifies the importance of conscious listening and the serious problem that we are losing our listening. He then provides five relatively easy exercises to help improve our conscious listening. The whole speech is very logical and persuasive with clear interpretation about current situation why we are losing our listening and the importance of listening. Also, the speaker provides a lot of specific examples to help audience understand the content better, and makes the speech more attractive.

2). I think this TEDTalk is also a good subject to turn into an infographic. Firstly this TEDTalk has a very clear theme and organization, so it is easy to find out the main points of the content and divide them into different part clearly to make an infographic. The information can be visualized. And the speaker also provides many vivid examples that can be transformed into images for the infographic.

Response to Butterick's Practical Typography
It is obvious that typography is important for the text such as the articles publishing on the newspaper, magazines, or the internet. As a visual thing that presents in front of the eyes of the readers, the most important purpose the typography is used is to attract readers at first sight, so then they will be willing to read the following contents carefully.
Also, the typography is not only used to show attractive styles and leave readers a good impression on a newspaper or magazine, and it can be used to make the page layout more effective and clear for the readers to follow. With a successful typography, the contents can be better organized and the readers will be guided to read articles they interested in more easily. Just like the author mentions, the resume with a well-organized and noticeable typography catches the eyes of the interviewer. So also when designing the typography, it is necessary to understand the general information of the text first, so that we can make the typography more effectively.

Infographic is different from the video lecture. The video lecture tells the audiences complete content of its topic about how to write a story. From watching the video lecture we learn the information more detailed and directly by watching and listening, and we understand the idea better. But infographic is created to present the important data of this lecture by using static pictures and graphs which help us to get the general idea more easily and clearly. It simplifies the content of the lecture and leave out some details.
In my perspective, infographic information is easier for me to comprehend. Because the infographic shows important data clearly by providing visual pictures and graphs, so I can understand its main idea more easily. But from the video lecture, it is difficult to figure out the main points by listening to the whole long speech, for sometimes we cannot recognize what it important and what is not.
However, watching the video lecture is a more enjoyable experience than reading infographic. The infographic is static and just providing the visual data that helps to understand the main idea. But the video is dynamic and we can listen and watch how the speaker presents his idea. It is a more interesting method to learn the information by listening speaker’s expression with his own way.

Audience: people who are interested in viral music
       Stance: objective stance
       Genre: analysis paper
       media/design: texts, pictures, infographics

3) While you are only outlining the essay--not writing it word-for-word--you can still get a feeling for what this essay would look like. How is the infographic different from the traditional essay you outlined?
The infographic uses pictures to show information and gives audience a vivid and visual image. It is easier to understand and analyze information for writing an outline. In traditional essay, we need to read carefully and summarize the important contents.

4) Strengths and weaknesses of the infographic: what does the infographic do better than the essay? What does the essay do better than the infographic?
Strengths: The way of presenting data is more interesting and eye-catching because it has visual aids instead of just text. Meanwhile, it is vivid because normally it is designed to interact with reader with animation. Infographic is also easier for readers to understand information clearly.
Weaknesses: By using infographics, some details may not be shown or included in the graphics, in which case some minor data needed notice are not well presented. So the essay does better in providing the complete content with detailed explanation of some information needed notice.

5) How does this qualify as an essay and not a series of pictures?
It is consider as an essay but not a series of picture, for it has clear purpose and main ideas, provide the analysis of data and give a conclusion to the result.

In the reading “Searchin” by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, the author shows that in today’s digital era, music as an audio file can be searched from the websites and appreciated freely by every people online. Also he considers the differences of music from old days, when people buy the music records form record store. The music has changed because of web.
Besides, as we know the reading “Searchin” has changed from Web 2.0 to Web 1.0, the differences between them include that Web 1.0 is static and lack of interaction, and using Web 2.0 we can read this article more enjoyable with its dynamic characters and we may interact with the author by providing comments on this web. Beyond these, the content of the reading is actually the same no matter which web tools we use. “Searchin” uses intrographic to provide information, which looks more direct, clear, and attractive. The content can be understood easier by audience. But in order to transfer the text article into an infographic, first we need to summarize the article and find out important ideas. Also creating infographic needs creativity and choose proper ways to classify data.

Response to “The Data Miner’s Guide to Romance”
It is a pretty interesting reading with its original topic which is to provide guide to romance by the data miners. In the reading the author uses PowerPoint to displays many collected photo data and analyzes them by using statistics among with some sentences’ explanation in words. It is a creative way that makes the contents more visual and vivid, and also attracts readers and helps them learn information better.

And it is also effective that optimizing for our target audience by comparing two different kinds of collected data from oneself and suitors, with specific category and pictures provided.
Overall, the reading shows a creative and effective example of data collection and analysis which is worth learning, but also it is not an easy method for us with its complex process of collecting and demonstrating data.

The punk music and Web 2.0 are similar in some aspects. Firstly, they both have a fast development and draws lots of attention at a time. The punk, which was a kind of rock music born in the 1960s and 70s, grew very fast and became particularly popular in the late 1970s with its unique music style and rebellious spirit. Just like punk music, Web 2.0 appeals much attention and owns many users at the time it appears on the internet. With its new platforms for communication and the collective intelligence application, Web 2.0 plays an important role in people’s lives with a large number of users around the world. In addition, Punk and Web 2.0 also focus on social. The punk movement has the idea that uses music to show the social state, express their attitude the current society and calls for progress. The same as Web 2.0, it also stresses the importance of social, for providing the new platform to interaction and share clever ideas. Moreover, as the article “Safety Pin as Signifier” mentions, the progress of punk experimental. Because with country development, the original spirit of the music may change into some others that we do not know within different social state. Similarly, Web 2.0 will develop with technological innovation and the need of today’s netizens, so what it will be like in the future is also unpredictable.

Response to “Web 2.0 to Social 3.0: The Next Big Thing”
This article gives an introduction of Social 3.0 with its transition from Web 2.0. As we have known, with the collective intelligence application, Web 2.0 has brought users much convenience by collecting and providing multiple information and clever ideas from all around the world. Considered a progress, social 3.0 pays more attention to the collection of intelligence within the idea of synchronous collaboration. Take the example of Google Drive which the article has mentioned. With this software, it is realistic that people work together on a same project simultaneously with different computers. In this way people get more convenience with synchronous cooperation and also collect intelligence with interaction. In addition, with the transition from Web 2.0, Social 3.0 emphasizes more about “social” with its interactional feature, which means people have more communication and interaction with each other from the internet. With the advance of technology, people can use various applications as platforms to connect with each other synchronously on computers or mobile devices, which brings more convenience and effective communication in today’s network era.
